Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Using a microscope can be frustrating. If you don't know what to look for, you could spend a lot of lost time observing blurry images, water bubbles, or cracks in the slide. This often happens to my students, which is why we need a powerful microscope that, with our cameras, can record what we see!

My students are all recent immigrants to the United States for whom English is a second or third language.

They have come to the United States for different reasons: opportunity, escape from oppression, or following family here after long separations. All of them are seeking a great education and their own American Dream. Science is a fantastic way for my students to learn English because of all of the hands-on activities we do. These create the space and a need for communicating with one another. Technology, like the microscope I am requesting, can be an essential tool because it allows us to share what we have seen, and collaborate about the science behind it.

My Project

The microscopes we use in my classroom are basic models that can see most anything we put under them. However, our goals are not just to see the small stuff, but to understand it better through experiments. A microscope such as the one I am requesting can find objects more easily, see them closer, as well as more clearly. One very important feature is that it can remain connected to a computer so we can record images and videos of what we see at a moment's notice. This is essential for quantifying HOW MANY cells are growing on our slides, HOW FAST is a flea's heartbeat, and exactly WHAT TYPES of plankton and algae are swimming in our water. We will use this microscope for these applications, as well as independent research projects students are doing with DNA barcoding.

As our young school grows, more and more we are pursuing advanced science experiments with our classes such as original DNA research and cell culturing.

With a dedicated advanced microscope connected to our classroom computer, we would have a complete microscope imaging station in the classroom that students can use for these pursuits. As they apply for college and careers, they will have great experiments under their belts and the experience and language they need to succeed. Please help!
