My Students

"Tell me and I'll forget. Teach me and I'll remember. Involve me and I'll learn"-Ben Franklin. Much of a school day includes teachers teaching their students information and strategies. What is often overlooked is the value of students getting involved, teaching other students so they really learn.

My 4th grade students are very special and very diverse.

They all speak two languages fluently, Spanish and Bengali primarily, with English as their second language. While many of their academic skills are below grade level average, to have the ability to translate between two languages within seconds, shows their true brilliance and capabilities. Our school has a very diverse culture with students of many backgrounds: mainly Bengali, Hispanic, and Asian, and with approximately 30% of the students being English Language Learners. The teachers and staff do all they can to support the many diverse needs, and use all of the resources available in the school. We also strongly encourage students to act as role models to their peers, especially when the commonality of their home language is so present in their school community.

My Project

With this ELMO document camera, I will be able model various strategies on a projector, so that each student can follow along. The students will be able to show their work to their classmates, make comments and suggestions on their peers' work, and highlight their strengths. As we enter a busy spring season with many new units of study, including fractions and historical essay writing to start, with the ELMO we will be able to show step-by-step solutions to math problems, model pictures that show different ways of thinking, and share writing ideas with their classmates on a display so that all students can participate in their peers' learning. With a class of diverse learners at all levels of development, it is very important for everyone to remain engaged in the lesson, and students enjoy listening to and helping out their classmates.

Donations to this project will make a positive impact on our classroom as it will allow all of the students to share their work, anonymously if preferred, and students will be able to critique their classmates' work.

Seeing what other students are doing will significantly help students learn new strategies, trigger new ideas, and even give them the opportunity to see others make mistakes, and for some students, boost their confidence in themselves and their own learning.
