My Students

Books are amazing, aren’t they? Imagine finding a non-fiction series that elementary school children can't get enough of! Well, I found the series... and you can help me bring it to my classroom!

Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading materials that children from more affluent families take for granted. Our children have a great hunger for knowledge, but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite.

My Project

My students need a collection of books from the 'I Survived' series: Epic Disasters, Nature Attacks, and Collector's Toolbox. I am always looking for books that will HOOK even my most reluctant readers... and this certainly fits the bill. We plan to use these books during our silent reading periods simply to let children enjoy the reading experience. My fourth graders love this series and it appeals especially to those who balk at reading the thicker novels. The series also appeals to students who enjoy historical fiction filled with a sense of adventure. The titles in this set are: The Destruction of Pompeii, AD 79 The Nazi Invasion, 1944 The Japanese Tsunami, 2011 The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863 The Attacks of September 11, 2001 The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941 Hurricane Katrina, 2005 The Shark Attacks of 1916 The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 Additionally we ordered two books that were not included in the box sets. My biggest challenge will be how to keep up with the demand for the books! My kids are so excited to read every one of them.

There is no better way to promote a hunger for reading than to find a series and get hooked!

I look forward to shaping positive reading behaviors through this collection of wonderful books!
