This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us understand heart health! These blood pressure monitors will teach us about the importance of exercise to heart health.

My students are highly motivated and headed to college!

Approximately 80% of my students qualify for the Federal Government's Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Although many of the student's I teach are economically disadvantaged, they set their sights on the stars! They set high goals for themselves and work hard toward achieving those goals. Our school is a public school in Southern California serving students in 9th-12th grades.

My Project

The role of fitness in heart health is clearly shown through data collected by researchers. This equipment will allow my students to complete an experiment that requires them to measure how exercise affects heart rate and blood pressure. This hands-on experience will help my students make better choices regarding their personal health. The lab requires the students to measure their resting heart rate and blood pressure several times. The subject then jogs around the school several times and the heart rate and blood pressure are taken immediately after the exercise is completed. The heart rate is measured for every minute until it returns to the resting heart rate. The student's score fitness points for the changes in heart rate and blood pressure and they are able, in the end, to estimate their own personal fitness level.

The equipment provided by this project will help my students understand the importance of exercise for good heart health.

By comparing the changes in heart rate and blood pressure between members of their groups, they will see that not everyone has the same resting heart rate or pressure and some students will show greater change after exercise than others. This will allow us to discuss the factors that affect the overall health of the heart.
