My Project
Our school's speech team runs a school store where our students take turns serving as the cashier and sell a variety of motivating toys and snacks to their peers and teachers. Many of our students, who are aged 5 to 10 years old with autism, struggle with social communication.
Our school store allows our students to practice their communication skills functionally.
It teaches the important life skill of engaging with a cashier when making a purchase. They greet one another, look at a menu of their choices, make requests, and count and exchange money. The students also have the opportunity to visit Costco on a monthly basis to buy more products and, when returning to school, sort the new store goods to to restock the school store.
We sell our products to our students at an extremely discounted rate to support its accessibility and only use the proceeds to purchase more products to run our school store. Sometimes, due to inflation/cost of the items, we do not earn enough money at the school store to restock/buy new products. That is why I am looking to the kind and generous donors at DonorsChoose to help us restock our school store with new products. With these items, our students will create "snack packs" to give out at our school store, which will allow opportunities to practice give-and-take social communication skills.
