This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in the southwestern part of Houston and serves kids from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. We are a neighborhood school and a community in the truest sense of the word. We work very closely with our kids and their families to put them on the path to success. We are a diverse place in many ways and I am very fortunate to teach such a wonderful group of kids.

I have been incredibly fortunate to get support for projects in the past and the resources your generosity has purchased has helped my students use their imagination and go everywhere from Mount Olympus to Manassas, Virginia, but now I am seeking your help for the after school sports team I coach.

My Project

Do you remember the thrill of going in a batting cage? They used to be everywhere. I remember going to a batting cage that was part of a local arcade and using quarters for the pure adrenaline rush that came with the slow mechanical creak before a baseball shot out at home plate. Your quarters would only get you a few minutes in the cage at a time but you got multiple at bats and you learned to adjust your timing and swing.

My baseball players have never been in a batting cage but a pitching machine and cage could revolutionize our practices and give our players much better preparation for facing real pitchers.

My team is routinely filled with newcomers to the sport who are brave, clever, and tough. Every year though we compete against time in addition to other teams. We work on our swing with batting tees and yours truly pitching, but getting my guys more and more swings in game-like situations will help us continue to grow.

This is a big ask - but team sports are a crucial part of adolescence and last season gave us a chance to have fun and grow. There was blood, sweat, tears but we also earned nicknames, set school records, and left it all on the field. It has been a rough couple of years but I have never been prouder of the young men I coached. If you know the feeling of exhilaration that comes with truly connecting your swing with a ball (and it's a feeling that can come from playing baseball, or just knowing that you have really done your best with something) please consider donating to this project.
