Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a literacy coach and I work with kindergarten through fifth grade. My focus with the primary grades is writing. As I go from class to class and assist educators in the teaching of writing, I notice how children rely heavily on the teacher to help them spell.

With a population of 101 English-language learners, our student body has many students who are afraid to take risks with the language and very often are reluctant to write.

The spelling dictionary is a wonderful resource for students. One teacher in our school purchased these dictionaries last year for her first-grade class, and this tool helped build independence and confidence. The book begins with a list of some high-frequency words by each letter of the alphabet, and then there are extra lines for children to add words they frequently use but have trouble spelling. The book features a page for each alphabet letter, plus contractions and number, holiday, and color words.

Your help will make it possible for students to use a reference tool instead of asking the teacher. It will give students autonomy in the writing workshop.
