My Students

Our students are full of creative energy and imagination! Our classes are abuzz with excited chatter during cooperative work time and silent with steely focus while writing or researching on our Chromebooks. It is my mission to harness all that buzzy interest and energy and direct it into innovative ways to build their understanding of the content.

A handful of statistics can't capture the hearts of these kids, but let me share with you a few insights to make their need clearer.

Our students are a diverse mix of Latino, Filipino and African American children. Our neighborhood is high poverty so 100% of the students receive free lunch. For a few, the school meals are the most reliable source of nutrition they have.

Their reading skills range from those working on still blending letter sounds to those writing essays on theme in the current novel we are reading. Over half of the kids come from homes where English isn't the native language, yet all of my students have reclassified as proficient in English, some just within the last school year. A few of them are identified as gifted, but every one of them is uniquely talented.

My Project

These cameras and microphones will help our students become global collaborators. Today students are expected to work together in teams and share their work in different ways with others. Learning is not just an individual pursuit but a community one. This equipment will enable all of our students to practice the teleconferencing that is so much a part of the way we work today.

Students will be able to work with peers across the city or around the world on projects online.

They will be able to invite neighboring community schools to robotics challenges without having to raise funds for buses. Our kids will be able to Skype professionals for an on-site career day. We will be able to participate in virtual field trips. Students will be able to interview experts and get their learning directly from the source. These small pieces of technology can open doors to the world for our kids!
