This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I can practically hear the trees screaming “Save Us!” as I press print on the copy machine week after week.

I teach 4th grade at a Title One school, which means that a large percentage of our families are low income, with many of the students receiving free or reduced lunches.

With recent budget cuts made to the state and local districts, and more on the way, our school has lost many of its intervention classes, which were designed to help our low performing and struggling students. This being the case, we have to do more remediation in the classroom, such as teaching students their basic facts in math. Unfortunately this does require us to use quite a large amount of paper either for copying purposes or just merely for the students to write on.

My Project

I would like to have these communicator boards in the classroom, so students could insert the worksheets that we use daily inside and be able to write on them with a whiteboard marker for easy clean up. This would allow the students to use the same paper over and over, without need for a new one. An example of this would be when students are practicing their multiplication tables. We have one minute timed tests everyday, so students can practice their facts daily and eventually learn them by heart. If we had communicator boards than that would save us reams of paper a year. The students would also be more motivated to work, since it would be a change from the typical paper and pencil they are used to. The board could also be used for a variety of other assignments and subjects simply by sticking a blank piece of paper inside. The students would then be able to problem solve, brainstorm, quick write, etc. and then hold their boards up so I could check progress from a distance.

This project is important because it would help limit the amount of paper used in the classroom, allowing the school to use that money towards other purchases.

It would also make learning more exciting for the students, since it would be a change from the norm. Lastly, it would help save thousands of trees in the process. Thank you in advance for all of your support.
