My Students

My students are creative thinkers, problem-solvers, dreamers, and achievers. They are curious about learning, and they show incredible wonder about everyday experiences that we take for granted. They are eager to learn and to explore the world around them.

In our classroom, we work to show each child a deep respect for them as an individual.

My students have their own ideas, concerns, questions, thoughts, dreams, beliefs, and more. Children at this age are learning about who they are as people, and how they as people fit into larger systems such as family, school, community, and humanity. Each child comes from an individual family, with individual belief systems, customs, and values. My students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds, bringing their traditions, cultures, and values into our classroom, teaching all of us about themselves.

My students are teachers. I am constantly learning through them. They teach me about the names of a variety of bugs, the height of the tallest building in the world, and how the planets revolve around the sun due to gravity. They will continue to teach me even after they have left my classroom. I'm so lucky I get to be their teacher!

My Project

Due to the current pandemic, there is a lot up in the air right now about how children are going to learn this year. One idea that is being discussed is learning outdoors, as experts recommend spending time with others outdoors to limit the spread of COVID-19. Our outdoor space is not currently equipped to support how children learn best, which is through hands-on materials. This outdoor scale will allow my students to engage in mathematics and science in a safe, outdoor space that is designed specifically to engage my students in meaningful learning. More time spent learning outdoors is linked to other positive outcomes as well, including positive mental health, which is especially important as many students right now are experiencing negative mental health as a result of the uncertainty of the pandemic.

Research has shown that young children learn STEM best from engaging with hands-on materials.

This scale will allow my students a safe way to engage in hands-on STEM learning in an outdoor space in a way that is developmentally-appropriate. Through the use of the balance scale, my student will learn concepts such as greater than, less than, equal to, which is mathematics, and measurement of weight, which is science and mathematics, both of which are included in STEM. As we use this outside, I will be including books I already own and other resources from the IF/THEN collection to highlight diverse representation in STEM near the scale, to bring up conversation of diverse representation in STEM.
