This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a school that serves students with a variety of special needs, including autism, intellectual disabilities and emotionally disturbed. From the outside looking in, people may assume they are not athletic and are physically incapable, but they are wrong! Our students compete at the highest levels of competitive sports. We participate (and win) in Special Olympics games, CHAMPS middle school athletics and run in New York Road Runner events.

Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

Our students do not back down from a challenge. That is what I love most about this age group and population. They love to be active. They love sports. They love physical education.

My Project

Our wonderful students with disabilities at our school are all members of the New York Road Runners program. Our theme this year for physical education is life long physical fitness and part of that means training to compete in numerous virtual marathons. A treadmill will be an extremely useful tool to increase stability, endurance and strength. Walking or running on a treadmill is an excellent source of exercise that puts less stress on the body than walking or running on a flat surface outdoors. Treadmills also offer the option for careful heart rate and blood pressure monitoring for patients suffering from those issues.
