My Students

My students are smart, curious, fun-loving, creative, hardworking, helpful, and kind. My 17 students represent countries all over the world, as well as learning levels from kindergarten to fifth grade. Some of my students need daily intervention while others need daily enrichment.

My school consists of about 1,000 students of diverse backgrounds and diverse learning abilities.

We have a growing population of ELL students and students for which we implement interventions in reading and math, as well as students needing enrichment to acquire success for their educational needs.

Our school does not receive Title I funding; therefore, the technology that we have in our classroom is limited and has to be funded through other means. Our school has an amazing administration and staff who are dedicated to meet each of these diverse needs. The environment of our school is warm, nurturing, and respectful.

My Project

After visiting the Ron Clark Academy a couple of years ago (thanks to DonorsChoose.org), I learned some new and engaging teaching methods to motivate my second grade students. One of my biggest takeaways was learning about room transformations. I have already taught reading, math, and phonics lessons this year through transforming our classroom as a Glow Room using black lights and consumable glow-in-the-dark supplies.

With this year's class I had Text Feature Surgery Day, and my second graders wore gloves, surgery gowns and caps and became surgeons for the day as they creatively completed engaging learning activities.

The students love these lessons, but to teach them, I need to replenish some of the materials each year to continue the activities.

I am requesting items such as backdrops for the room transformations. For the Text Feature Surgery, I would love to have disposable gowns, gloves, and caps for the students to wear. For the Glow Room, I am requesting more glow sticks and glow slime. I am requesting pencils that look like twigs for the camping transformation. The red carpet is for the adjectives runway fashion show we do. The mustaches are for the fraction pizzeria. These transformations incorporate the state standards in all subject areas with fun-filled activities to make learning fun and students are completely engaged in their learning.
