Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"The only way to have a friend is to be one." - Ralph Waldo Emerson Compassion is a critical skill for children to learn. At my school, we use a program called Second Step and these books and materials will enhance our current compassion and empathy lessons. Inside Out decorations will encourage and reward students as they use their self-regulation tools. Students will gain a deeper understanding of Compassion by creating books about kindness to share with people experiencing homelessness. We will read the feelings stories, and then use the books to inspire stories to share with others. Students will learn that their voices, ideas, and writing can positively impact people around the community.

I'd love to create a Compassion Carpet (Shark - our school mascot) for students who have worked through situations with others and can now see life from another perspective.

Throughout the project, students will capture learning in photos and gather them in photo books to remember their experiences. Students will also complete rating scales for their feelings about compassion and empathy. Upon completing the project, students will complete a survey to express their feelings about different topics related to compassion, kindness, and alleviating suffering.
