My Students

I teach kindergarten in a Title 1 school in West Harlem, New York City. The children are an active energetic group who enjoy challenges. We celebrate diversity and embrace the eleven home languages which are a shared part our classroom culture. The school does not have a library and we depend on the books in our classroom as the only available resource.Children take home book baggies to practice reading, but we have very few books to meet and support their different reading levels.

My Project

We need level reader books to help children grow as learners. We have limited resources and need to support our children in their earnest desire to know more about the world around them. We have chosen book series like Elephant and Piggie and Dr. Seuss so the kindergarten children have opportunities to develop their interest in reading and love of literacy. In our class, the children have time to select books and share together the pictures and stories they find. Children also are able to take books home and share with their family members. Unfortunately, we do not have enough books for all the children in the classroom.
