Help Ms. McAvoy

"I like to read, just not these books." It's daily reading time in my class. As an English teacher, the above statement breaks my heart. Even when my students don't verbalize the statement above, their apathy is evident. I have to continually find new ways to invest students who sit, eyes glazed over, pretending to read. I teach at a military themed high school. Out of my 120 students, 110 are boys. My independent reading library is all too small. There is no school library. My boys, the majority in my classes, have the lowest reading levels by far. Perhaps that is because most popular books like "Twilight" simply do not appeal to them. Meanwhile, precious instructional and learning time passes. They only have months before the English Regents and SATs. They are years behind their suburban peers in reading levels and they have to prepare to read college books and become lifelong readers! Please don't let them fall through the cracks!! You can help. All my students need is literature that appeals to THEM. We need books about boys, books that reach out to teens, and books that will help my students navigate their all-too-demanding adolescent years. My students have requested a fresh assortment of novels like "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" so they can continue to raise their reading levels. This donation is not just about books. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance that they realize teenagers all over feel just as they do. My "Free-Write Fridays" reveals every week another student who just wants to know he is normal. Just like all of us, they just want to be heard. Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature and a new world of opportunities!
