My Students

OT can help children work on improving their cognitive, physical, and motor skills and enhance their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment. In a school setting, these areas would be worked on in order to enable the children to engage in classroom activities and tasks with their peers.

PS 48 is a community school serving children who require general education as well as special education and related services, including speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

My students are both girls and boys who have difficulties or limitations of some sort that negatively affect the way they learn or behave in the classroom. It can be something as mild as low strength which affects their grip on a pencil or scissor or something more severe such as SPD (sensory processing disorder) which affects their ability to receive and learn new information being taught by the classroom teacher.

My Project

Occupational Therapists in the school setting look at skills which may interfere with a child’s educational performance such as gross motor skills, fine motor/hand function, oral motor function, visual motor and perceptual skills, sensory awareness/processing, self-care and pre-vocational tasks. These areas can be addressed through a variety of intervention strategies, which may include direct therapy with the child in an individual session or in a group setting, consultation with the teacher, modification of the environment, provision of adaptive equipment, and staff training. The materials we are requesting will aid in carrying out treatment for the children which will in turn help them engage in their learning environment respectively.

What is great about the equipment that we seek is that it is durable and will be taken good care of so that it will last for years to come, thereby benefiting children who are currently receiving services as well as children who will receive services in the future.

The principle of our school is committed to providing an excellent education to each and every one of her students. The equipment that we are seeking include many well-known children’s’ games, fine motor/ visual motor/visual perception activities/games, fidget toys, and pencil grips.
