My Students
I am the librarian for two elementary schools, both filled with creative, fun kids who look to me as a teacher, as an information specialist, and as a fellow enthusiastic reader. According to KidsCount, 43% of students in our district are eligible for free and reduced lunch – 7 out of 15 elementary schools are Title I – and 14% receive special education services.
They come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, but in the library, they share excitement over new books.
Many students cannot get to the public library, so their checkouts at the school library are their main access to books. I love when a book finds a champion, and word-of-mouth leads to a long holds list.
My Project
After conducting a Mock Caldecott with first and second graders; introducing kindergartners to the Geisel favorites Elephant & Piggie; and promoting past Newbery winners to my older students, I would love to have the most current winners of these and several other awards in our libraries.
Keeping the libraries stocked with new material is a challenge, especially midyear, when the district is between budget cycles and book fair profits have been depleted.
The ALA winners are high quality and have been vetted by librarians across the country. I've actually read many of them myself and can envision handing almost every one to specific students.
Having these books in our libraries will help my students keep up on the latest award-winners, getting the opportunity to read new classics.
Last year’s winners were hits; I can’t keep last year’s Geisel honoe “The Book Hog” on the shelf, and "Genesis Begins Again” is now a RI Middle School Book Award nominee. I look forward to sharing this year’s list with my students.
