My Students

My students benefiting from this project are in a Title One school with a great proportion living below the national poverty line. Our school provides wrap-around services including food, health services, clothing, mental health supports, etc. My students are hard-working scholars. We are learning in-person, masked up, and socially distanced. My resilient scholars value school and risk Covid-19 infection in their pursuit of receiving an equitable education. In one of my three classes, the scholars speak four different languages. We are now halfway through the school year and our scholars have impressed us in their leadership and academic growth, but there is still more work to be done!

I hope to keep the momentum going by getting the best learning materials available for these scholars who deserve it!

My Project

I teach three sixth-grade English classes, two Academic Intervention Service classes, and an Advisory class. In my English class, I have scholars who need intervention in their spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Two of the resources in this project will be utilized in small groups during English class periods to help scholars improve their writing skills. The colorful games are engaging, new, and will encourage buy-in from students who benefit from quality materials.

I don't want my students at risk of falling behind any further in their basic math and writing skills!

Although I am their English teacher, I know my students, and when I ask them, many can't show they have their multiplication tables memorized. Multiplication tables should be memorized in third grade or else most other math becomes much more challenging. My scholars are in sixth grade and should know their tables.

I have started quizzing all 54 scholars on their multiplication tables weekly at the start of our Academic Intervention periods. I was alarmed to see some scholars did not know their 0 and 1 tables, however, I know with these engaging, interactive resources, we can reach our goal of every scholar passing all of their 0-12 multiplication tables by the end of the 2021-2022 school year!

I am currently tracking each scholar's progress on the weekly multiplication quizzes on three separate sticker boards. I look forward to taking photos of scholars utilizing the new resources to study at lunch, after school, in learning centers, and in other free time to show the relentless pursuit needed to meet our shared goal!

Our students are going to learn to mentally multiply with ease, solidify their conceptual knowledge of fractions, and write with impeccable grammar and punctuation.
