My Students

At any point during the day, you might see students taking math notes while sitting on a rug, curled up reading with a pillow, or sitting in a bean bag working on a clipboard. My goal is to provide my students with alternative options that work with their learning styles.

Almost all of my students live in poverty.

My goal with my classroom has always been to create a comfortable, homey environment for my students to come to each day. Our school district is a high poverty district, and funds aren't readily available for new resources in the classroom. I have a class of 17 students who are learning at various levels. Many of my students are not working on level and struggle with the curriculum.

My Project

To try to encourage student learning, I have a number of centers available for students to work at, but I would love to be able to move away from desk work and move toward alternative seating. Let's be honest-student desks are not the most comfortable. For students, sitting in these uncomfortable desks isn't always the best for their personal learning style. If this project is funded, students will also be able to utilize a pub table for partner work, the futon for classwork and reading, and the balance ball chairs as an alternative to the standard desk chairs. My students (especially my reluctant readers) have recently discovered Choose Your Own Adventure books after we talked about them during a point of view lesson. Since then, kids have been checking out these books from our school library, but they've also requested that we add them to our classroom library as well.

By adding these resources to our classroom, you will help my students realize that desks are not the only place where learning takes place.

You'll help provide them with alternatives to desks, which for many of my students will make it easier for them to focus and get work done. We will have new collaborative spaces where students can work with their peers on new ideas. My students love working away from their desks, and with your help, they will have even more opportunities to do just that.
