My Students

We are a Title I school in an urban area of Los Angeles. More than 85 percent of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school every day ready to learn and appreciate the resources we are able to provide, but those resources that the school can supply are fewer and fewer each year as the budget continues to shrink.

My class of curious fourth graders is packed with motivated learners who want to know more about the world around them.

They like to ask questions and love getting detailed answers as they read, write, and learn about their favorite subjects. Funding the materials needed to engage them in the lessons, however, can be a challenge.

My Project

In the age of texting and instant messaging, formal writing has lost some of its luster in the eyes of young people. But writing remains a vital tool of communication that students need to master.

Fourth graders in California have many exciting topics to write about when we study subjects like explorers, early Californians, the mission period, and the Gold Rush.

As part of our study of state history, we read historical fiction such as "Island of the Blue Dolphins" and "By the Great Horn Spoon," which lend themselves to creative and informational writing opportunities.

The resources I have selected are created by teachers who have successfully used them in their own classrooms. First on the list is a package of writing units to address the four writing genres covered in fourth grade, as well as a package of grammar lessons to help students polish their writing. I've also chosen resources that will provide interesting writing assignments for the students, such as a California Travel Journal, as well as teaching guides and activities for the novels we read in class. Finally, I've included a vocabulary building word game from Mrs. Wordsmith.
