My Students

I teach students with visual impairments ranging from low vision to total blindness. I have students across multiple schools in NYC. My students are in classrooms with sighted peers.

All of my students have visual impairments.

They access learning through braille or auditory means. Some of my students have visual impairments and additional disabilities - like deafblindness or learning disabilities. They are a diverse group of wonderful students, and they need lots and lots of stuff to support their learning!

It is only October, and I have spent over $1,000 on materials for my students. I am reaching out to you to help get some remaining big items that would make a huge difference in their school year.

My Project

We need some things!

In NYC, space is a luxury, so it makes sense that in NYC public schools, space is hard to come by.

At one of my schools, I work with students in a hallway. My little teaching cart has to be rolled in and out of a classroom each day. However, the cart that I found in my school's basement (gross) is too small. Braille supplies take up so much space! One braille textbook is possibly twenty volumes in braille. We need a bigger cart to fit all of our supplies.

My students are various ages - from first grade to fifth grade. We need a new table with height adjustment so that we can find the goldilocks height in between little braille reading first-graders and tall, growing fifth graders. Because we have to move our things out of the hallway at night, we need wheels so our table can be more easily moved.

Apple uses a built-in accessibility feature called VoiceOver to read the information available on the screen to a student who is blind. For example, an iPad will read a webpage to a student to allow them to independently do research for a project. Additionally, for my kids with multiple disabilities, there are iPad apps that can be used for communication and instruction.

A machine called a PIAF can be used to make tactile graphics for students who are braille readers - from a bar graph to a map. However, the paper used to make the graphics is over $1 a sheet.
