This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are ready to learn music! So far they have been learning with their ears and I want them to learn with their hands! Please help gift them with their first instrument.

My school is a Title One bilingual New York City public school established in 2013.

It is located in one of the oldest school buildings in Manhattan. My students come from all over upper manhattan to be taught in a school that celebrates their home culture and language; while teaching them a new language. We have approximately half English speakers and half Spanish speakers, allowing our beautiful students to learn from each other as well as their teachers (who are all fluent in both English and Spanish). We have many amazing opportunities for students to learn by doing including our school garden and a field trip a month for each class. Unfortunately, we don't currently have instruments for them to learn how to play music. You can help change that!

My Project

Because our students speak either English or Spanish at home, my music class is a place where everyone gets to speak the same language; the language of music. In September 2013, the school opened with three kindergarten classes. Each year it will add a grade up to fifth grade. I want this music program to grow with our school and these instruments with instruction booklet will allow us to do so. I am so proud of what my students have accomplished so far with very few instruments (or homemade instruments) and am excited to see what we can do with our ukuleles! Please give these bright, talented students an opportunity to create beautiful music.

Ukuleles are a wonderful first instrument to learn basic chords and rhythms with. Additionally, the ability to have an instrument teaches responsibility and musicality. Who knows, you could be gifting a future NY Philharmonic ensemblist with their first instrument!
