Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you realized you could complete an activity without your teacher's help? My students have not yet had the opportunity to feel this success, but they also do not have the independent literacy centers they need to succeed.

I have 22 students in my classroom all of whom come from a high poverty area.

They love getting their hands on any kinds of books I have around, and I love watching their faces light up when we read new books. They are very kind to each other, and they love helping others in any way they can. They are a very active bunch of kids making recess one of their favorite times of the day. All of my students love getting attention whenever they can, so I often find that my lunch periods are filled with many students wanting to spend more time with me. Any type of hands-on activities make them happy and seem to help enhance their learning as well.

My Project

The independent learning centers I wish to have in my classroom would be a great resource for my kids. During each day we have a 45 minute block in which the kids are in several different groups (of four or five). During that time the students are completing different activities such as computer time, listening center time, reading time, etc. These reading and writing centers will help improve their reading and writing skills, and allow them to continue working on grade level. For students who are not yet on grade level, it will push them so that they can get there. The kits I am asking for are for groups of four children. They provide hands-on ways to teach reading and writing skills such as antonyms and synonyms. My students absolutely love center time because they get to show me what they can do on their own. I know they would absolutely love being able to use these centers to show me even more fantastic work.

I have many students who are not yet reading and writing on grade level in my classroom for various reasons.

These centers would give them the opportunity to work independently while still receiving the support they need to succeed. Since my students are from a high poverty area, they do not have as much access to the materials they need to succeed. We could really use your support and help.
