Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Set young children up for a lifetime of success with the gift of literacy. I teach first grade in a high poverty area. I teach in a wonderful school, but our resources are very limited.

My students come from homes where there are few to no books. Some have never even been read to by the time they get to school. They come to school looking forward to learning, but even our resources are limited. The books are old, outdated, and certainly not on their level.

We need a classroom library of books that are designed specifically for their reading levels. The books enable the students to feel successful reading because they are leveled from struggling to advanced readers. There is something for all of them. I have also requested Weekly Readers for my students. This is a weekly magazine that they receive to encourage reading and other subject objectives that they need to acquire. These go home with them as well so that they can share with family and friends. This also provides them with literature to read at home.

You can set up a lifetime of success by providing children the opportunity to succeed in reading. You can empower them, make them feel great, and give them a powerful gift that no one can ever take from them...literacy.
