My Students

Can you imagine being unable to read? To be unable to sink into a great book and lose yourself in it? To look at a page of text and see letters floating around instead of word and sentences? My students with dyslexia struggle to develop a love for reading because it is so hard for them.

My students are wonderful, intelligent, inspiring young students who have all been diagnosed with a learning disability.

They attend a high needs community public school in New York City and are educated alongside their non-disabled peers. They are driven to succeed despite the difficulties they face in school!

My Project

Many of my students have dyslexia, which makes reading and spelling extremely difficult for them. One of the hardest skills for them is reading and spelling sight words, which are irregularly spelled words that you cannot read by sounding them out (the, should, through). Dyslexia makes it difficult for my students to see the patterns in language and to remember letters and sounds. These flashcards are helpful for teaching sight word recognition to students with dyslexia and other learning challenges. Each word is embedded in a brightly colored picture that represents the word. The images embedded into each word ensure that children gain a rich sight word vocabulary. Many of my students are visual learners, and have a much stronger memory for pictures rather than words. These flash cards will improve my students sight word reading skills and thus cause their overall reading level to increase!

My students will improve their reading skills, become more confident, and their brilliance will be able to shine through!
