Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work with inquisitive, wonderful Pre-K children in a high need area. They love to learn through various, fun ways but they especially love to cook! Cooking teaches them various life skills such as following directions, taking turns, completing something from beginning to end, working as a team, and how to make a meal. It also teaches them academic skills such as reading, math, and science. Children learn to read (and sometimes write their own) recipes. Children learn math through identifying numbers in recipes and counting and measuring ingredients. Children learn science through the cause and effect they observe throughout the cooking process and the changes in matter (solid, liquid, gas) that occur by adding heat or cold to matter. I also teach children how to cook and eat healthy. Cooking is truly a great way for children to learn!

Although I try my best to incorporate cooking into our everyday learning, our supplies are very limited. Children love to cook but in order to learn through cooking you need various materials such as child appropriate cookbooks, pots and pans, scales, and utensils to cook with.

Our class needs books that will connect literature with cooking, cookbooks that help us see the mathematical and scientific connection in cooking, and books that teach us the importance of being healthy. We need non-stick pots and pans, a food scale to learn measurement, kid DVDs that show the process and procedures of safe cooking, and we need various materials to cook such as a oven mitts, a food chopper, a can opener, and a child appropriate peeler. These materials will give us the opportunity to learn math and science through cooking.

You can make it possible for my students to be smart, great chefs! Cooking truly is an important part of life and it is a fun way to learn important academic skills. Please help my students learn science and math through cooking by donating the much needed materials we are asking for! Thank you!
