Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Year after year, my students have walked into the school building and our classroom with smiles eager to learn. In our classroom, we focus on respecting and helping one another. A focus throughout the year has always been diversity within each of us. My students understand that we are different and there's nothing wrong with that. I can teach you something and you can teach me something. Even during birthdays we sing Happy Birthday in each language spoken by our students. Its a beautiful thing watching and listening to students sing in a different language from what they are used to speaking.

My students are all English Language Learners.

They are learning English together while remembering their native languages and cultures. The school I teach at is a Title I school, and all students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My Project

Within the last year, our students have encountered many challenges. Teaching in a community with many minorities, I feel having resources for students to understand that it's okay to be different is crucial. While its important that they are respected and treated equally, they must remember to treat others with the same respect.

Students love listening to read-alouds that have a message to teach.

What better way to provide them with the knowledge of diversity, respect, equality and showing empathy than through books?

Having a basket of books that teach these important topics will allow students to willingly speak about what's on their minds at all times and understand they won't be judged. I know my students will be able to relate to many of the characters in these books. This additional book basket will make a HUGE difference in my classroom and most importantly in the lives of our students...our future!
