Help Ms. E.

As part of the Academic Intervention Services at our Brooklyn elementary school, I teach remedial reading to first graders. Most of our students are eligible for Title 1 services, with about 9% residing in temporary housing or foster homes. With not much support at home, I have had to encourage my students to develop strategies for helping themselves so that they would be able to problem-solve for themselves. To help in their study of sight words and unfamiliar words, the students are given five index cards with a new word on each, which they are allowed to take home each night to study. Building on their understanding that words develop into sentences, and sentences develop into stories, students develop the process further by compiling the sentences to create stories, which are then made into little books. Students develop great pride in their work, not only because they created a book, but that they created one that they can read by independently. Although we sometimes only get to make one or two books per child, and in some cases the child never gets to finish a book, the challenge is attempted by all. With the children taking the cards home on a daily basis, and the flipping of the cards as they study (say/spell/say/write/check), the cards become worn and soiled. To make them more durable, I would like to laminate the word cards, and also the little books that the students make. Aside from their own learning, students are encouraged to share their books with younger brothers and sisters. As they read to their siblings, they are reinforcing their learning, gaining self confidence and self-esteem, and strengthening their relationships. For my new groups in the coming school year, I would appreciate the donation of a laminating machine and supplies, which I can use to laminate our materials. For the safety of the children, I am most interested in a cold laminator, since we work in a very small space.
