My Students

I am trying to inspire my students to read. Many of my students do not have access to computers. If there are books on Science experiments right in the classroom, they no longer have an excuse not to do one! We need reference books, cookbooks, and general reading to build a classroom library!

My students are from the inner city.

They are all low income students. Many are ESL students. Some are 'gifted'. I have a wide range. Year after year I see students who haven't been inspired to read yet. As an avid reader myself, I am trying to change that.

My Project

If my students had a few books about science experiments in the classroom, they could no longer excuse themselves from doing science experiments with the "I don't have a computer or live near the library" excuse. If they don't have cookbooks for their cooking project during our nutrition unit, now they have some in their classroom. The Magic School Bus series is always a hit with my students. I hope to build some enthusiasm for Science and reading at the same time. We also put on an Environmental Science Fair for the school and these books will be of great use!

Many of my students don't have computers.

Neither in the classroom nor at home. I'd like to give these students a chance to be inspired. A chance to have information at their fingertips like some other students who are fortunate enough. Year after year I see them giving up. I'd like to help them stop using the excuse of "I don't have that, so I can't do it."
