Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in one of the largest middle schools in NYC, located in Queens. My school is a multicultural, title one school, where all students are given free breakfast and lunch. Due to the global pandemic, many of their families struggle with finding jobs or are working multiple jobs, to give their children the basic home essentials and school supplies needed for them to succeed. Many of my students have not mastered the English language yet, or are far below reading level. I am trying to help instill a love of reading, writing and self expression in them.

My students are some of the most curious, talented, avid readers and creative writers and illustrators.

Their love of reading inspires many of them to immerse themselves with a great book. With more resources, I hope to foster, instill and encourage a continuous passion for reading and an outlet for my students to express themselves creatively and artistically.

My Project

Many of my students have a fierce creative side that often don't get an opportunity to show it. I would love for my students to have the opportunity to have sketch books and pencils, to pursue their love of art and illustration. Because of the size of our school, students stay in one room all day. These art supplies would help students express their creativity. They are constantly drawing in their class notebooks, this would give them an opportunity to showcase their talents in many ways.

Please help fuel my student's fierce creative sides to shine!

Not only will these sketch books be used for personal outlets, but I will also incorporate them in illustrating scenes from the books we will read together. Drawing is a passion that many of my students do on the corners of their notebooks. I would love to see them be able to expand their creative sides onto bigger and better spaces!
