My Students

My students look forward to going to the computer lab. Last week, we were disappointed to learn that many of the headphones were broken from overuse, and needed replacing. Without headphones, the noise from the neighboring computers is too distracting and makes it difficult to concentrate.

My students attend a Title I school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

This means that over fifty percent of our families live below the poverty line. Many of the students' families aren't able to afford computers at home, so our computer lab is a very important place to them. We are a multi-cultural school, and the student population includes English learners and students with special needs. My students are a great group, and come to school enthusiastic and ready to learn. My school has purchased math software called Dreambox Learning. The computer lab is the only place where everyone can go and work on their math lessons at the same time. We also work on websites like Starfall and PBS Kids to improve literacy in a fun way. The children look forward to their weekly visits to the lab.

My Project

It would be wonderful if we had working headphones at every computer in the lab. My students are so eager to get time in the lab that they will use the computer even without the headphones, but wouldn't it be great if they could actually hear the instructions, sounds and music, so they will understand what is going on? Due to loss and malfunctions, we just don't have enough headphones for each computer. Sadly, many of the headphones that remain are missing the ear cushions and the students complain that they hurt their ears. Precious lab minutes are wasted as the children hunt for a computer that has a set of working headphones. I am requesting enough headphones to outfit every computer in our lab, plus a few extra to replace the remaining working ones that won't last much longer. With working headphones at each computer, my students could sit down right away and get started on their work, no more wasting time looking for headphones that work!
