Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Walking though the concrete and brick canyons of our city can be hard. Despite not having a lot of green outside, I am determined for our school to be an inviting oasis of plants. What better way to green the school than for students to learn about plants while growing their own gardens?

Our school is a small Title I school that sits in the most diverse place in New York City and the United States: Queens.

Traveling along the number 7 train, one can hear over a dozen languages spoken by people who have come from all over the world. The hallways of our school are no different. All of my students are immigrants and English Language Learners (ELL's). They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential. Many of my students have a close relationship with nature and growing plants in their homelands. I know their love of plants and the universal language of hands-on projects will get them involved no matter their level of English. They will be enthusiastic to get their hands dirty building hanging gardens around the school. Working together, they will learn a lot of language while doing it.

My Project

One thing elbow grease cannot provide is light for our plants. To maximize growth, no matter if a window is north or south-facing, we need light sources that can provide consistent full-spectrum light year-round. The fluorescent fixtures, bulbs and guards I am requesting will be hung everywhere we can build a hanging hydroponic farm. As they optimize growing systems the fixtures will also be a key variable students can modify with different bulbs, distances from their plants, and color filters. Taking care of plants where you live makes you a part of that place. By encouraging my students to build hanging gardens within our school, I hope they will take ownership of the classrooms where they spend so much time.

Many students will see that the skills they learned growing plants in their native country are valuable in their new home, as well.

They've traveled so far! Please donate these lights so my amazing students can light the next leg of their journey.
