My Project

At SGES, we are lucky to have a beautiful oasis of green space in an otherwise very developed part of South Philly. However, this garden area is in need of upgrades. We need a place to store our tools securely, and a place to sit, work on projects, and enjoy!

After surviving the challenges of the pandemic and the many traumas in our community, students need a tranquil, healing space.

Gardening and connecting with nature offers students both mental health benefits and hands-on learning opportunities.

The garden already plays an important role in our community. Last year, classes voted on and planted native flowers to help pollinators. Graduating 4th graders painted rocks in art class to add to a decorative border. We also use the garden space for special events - for example, 1st graders celebrated their "Spring Fling" this year by having a read-aloud party on blankets in the grass. It also offered a COVID-safe, outdoor meeting space when there were restrictions to having visitors in the building.

As a next step, we envision a garden where classes can use the raised beds to learn about environmental and life science topics, and where we can grow healthy foods in our own backyard. Students with sensory needs can enjoy the colors, scents, and textures in the garden. And in the counseling program, students can enjoy the many therapeutic benefits of tending to a garden.

A storage shed that can be locked will help us safeguard our tools and protect them from the elements. A picnic table will provide a space for small groups to engage in learning, discussion, planting activities, and garden related crafts. And finally, children can use the small chairs to rest, soaking up the peace and renewal that a garden can offer.
