My Students

We are a very small public school library, serving about 360 students, with 85% in poverty. Serving grades Pre-K thru 6 keeps our library very busy! Many of our students are struggling readers and learners. I believe all children can learn, with the right support. I encourage all my students daily.

We have about 35% - 40% of our students from many different countries all over the world.

We have an aging school built in the 60's, but we keep on going. We have an extremely dedicated staff who work so hard for our kids. We all think high poverty students deserve the same opportunities as other students, whether it's thru books, STEAM supplies, or anything else. My kids love building things, doing any kind of art, and love the chance to thrive. I already hear students talking about what they want to be when they grow up! Many younger students are already interested in science, but we simply don't have the resources at our school to truly be STEAM oriented! Kids are such natural builders and designers. All you need to do is watch a child in a sandbox or at the beach!

My Project

My vision is to build a STEAM Lab/Maker Station in our library. I have included many items that incorporate STEAM: several types of clays, magnetic gear boards, pattern blocks, 3D magnetic builders, a super snow science bucket, origami/construction paper, scissors, and storage trays/bins for these items. Our kids will have a blast and will do some very critical thinking, building, & designing. I foresee some wonderful after-school projects, library centers, as well as teachers checking out some of these important components for their classes. I have added one iPad as we don't have any in our library. There are over 66 amazing apps for STEAM (that I know of) for iPads! Students can paint, take photos, check the weather, make music, and much more! Lastly I have chosen a rolling "everything" cart, with stick on letters and encouraging emoticons. Since our library is so small storage is a BIG must! It will be also be a mobile lab if needed, so flexibility is built in.

PLEASE help use have STEAM supplies to support growth in Science, Tech, Engineering, Art and Math.

Our 21st century students will be able to use all of the amazing items to enhance their learning and stimulate their creativity! Our staff will also be able to use these items for years and years. Please help us transform our Library into a STEAM lab and maker space. It will be a real achievement! No one else in our district has anything like this! Please help us be the first!
