My Project

I am a Speech Therapist in a diverse D75 special education school in New York City who is requesting an iPad Stylus Pen and iPad case that combines a precision trackpad with a full-size keyboard to use with my nonverbal students to increase their methods of access using Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) apps. These students do not have speech devices of their on and are in need of various access methods in order to communicate and use their "voices". Having this technology will provide my students with the appropriate access methods they physically benefit from and need to communicate and create visuals. This will also assist them in becoming increasingly social and independent during their vocational tasks. Most importantly, it provides my students the opportunity to differentiate communication and have their own "VOICES!"

Our most recent venture is continuing a Food Pantry in our school.

This year we are really looking to up our game in the 811Q Food Pantry! Using the stylus pen and keyboard, I can teach my students how to access various communication apps with AAC as well as allow them to communicate through drawing, writing and typing. This will help them build the path to advocate for themselves. They can increase socialization amongst themselves when working in the Food Pantry as well as when they deliver both messages and packages to their peers across all of their school community. In addition, they can use the stylus pen and keyboard to organize inventory lists, to keep data and to self assess/express how they are doing vocationally. I'm trying to provide my students with the tools they need to be independent, hard working and most importantly give them the power to differentiate communication by using their "VOICES!"
