Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Edwin Abbott's novel "Flatland" is a fantastic introduction to multidimensional thinking. It is a very accessible work that inspires and stimulates students to this very day to think about the possibility and implications of a universe of more than three dimensions.

We are a rural school district in Central Washington.

All three schools are on a single campus, with about four hundred students at the high school. A lot of the students' parents are field laborers with limited proficiency in English. The percentage of students who qualify for free lunch is so high that it is cheaper to give all students free lunch than track the money from the ones who do not qualify. Approximately 80% of our students are Mexican. The vast majority of the students appreciate the value of a good education and work to take advantage of what is being offered to them. They benefit immensely from hands on activities.

My Project

The original novel "Flatland" is very much a product of its time. The social hierarchies and especially the status of women are somewhat foreign and often offensive to modern sensibilities. This film adaptation brings the mathematical concepts alive in a modern setting. Students will be able to connect more easily with the Flatland movie and will be more motivated to think through the implications of higher dimensions. They are already intrigued by the idea of a 4th dimensional universe. This movie will help take things to the next level. The bead chain will help with some hands on activities that explore the implications of one dimensional and two dimensional universes.

"Flatland: The Movie" will inspire students to explore the connections between math and the world around us.

Too often, math is seen as being divorced and disconnected with the every day world. With this movie, my students will see that pure mathematical reasoning can have profound implications and applications in their life. It will help them see why math is the language of science, and motivate them to understand math better so they can use it to understand the world better.
