My Students

My students come from a high-needs and poverty stricken area bringing challenges both inside and outside of the school building. I do not believe this defines them because I see the amount of potential within every one of them. My desire is to create an environment where the students are able to succeed and be prepared for their future.

School is a safe-haven for some of my students and I want to keep it that way.

I try to create an environment in my classroom where the students feel comfortable. My students are very energetic and love to keep busy in the classroom. One of my goals is for the room to be a place where they come to de-stress and forget about the world around them, if even for a short amount of time.

My Project

The world around us is changing constantly, and I believe classrooms need to catch up a bit. There are a number of classrooms that look the same as when I was in elementary school and I am trying to change and improve the learning environment. Staying in the same seat for 8 hours is boring and uncomfortable as an adult, and I don’t want that for my students. Wobble Chairs and Bouncy Bands are a great start in the right direction for my classroom.

Studies have shown that flexible seating increases motivation and engagement in the classroom.

I am not surprised that when students are physically active during class they have been known to perform higher academically and behave in a better manor. To some being able to move around in a chair or bounce their legs during instruction can seem distracting at first, but I have experienced in my co-workers classroom that it actually helps students maintain their focus on the task at hand.
