Children learn early on not to run with scissors because they can get hurt, but in my class this is a necessity. Sadly, we do not have enough supplies for every student. My students have to walk from desk to desk trying to get what they need to complete activities breaking down our structure.
My students are eleven special education students who attend a high poverty public school in the District of Columbia.
They are in the 2nd-4th grade and more than one grade level behind. They have a range of disabilities that are impacting their learning and not enough supplies to help them reach their IEP goals. Many of them need visual prompts and higher structure so they can function in the classroom.
Currently we only have 2 safety scissors for an entire class of 11. The only other scissors in the room are one pair of adult sharp scissors that make me nervous to have the students use. This leads to wasted instructional time and an unsafe learning environment. My students love and need hands-on activities but I hate that we cannot do them. Also my students need to review basic sight words, but I do not have enough index cards to send home the words of the week for them to review with their parents at home or independently. No student should have to be in a room where they don't even have their own scissor to use to do their work or unable to practice their homework.
With these materials my students will be able to have a more structured learning environment that they need to help them achieve their learning goals.
These organization kits have visual reminders for colors of each crayon which helps them organize and put things in the correct place. My students also need their own supplies so they can do their work. It's horrible that everyone does not have what they need to be successful.
