Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school in the Bronx, where over 80% of our students are receiving free lunch. Our school serves large population of students with disabilities and English language learners, where 85% of our student population identifies as Hispanic/Latino. Over the years, we have been improving our New York State exam scores compared to the district and hopefully one day, the city.

Our school focuses on building responsible and caring students who are prepared to help their community.

We offer multiple extracurriculars to mold these types of students, including: Student Government/Student Council, debate team, step team, specialized high school prep program, yearbook, Regents classes, and a partnership with Good Shepherd Services.

My Project

The books chosen for this project will be used for the Dystopian unit coming up as part of the Teachers College reading curriculum for the eighth grade. The other books chosen will provide students with urban literature choices to reflect their own upbringing and connect to the urban literature unit we just completed. Additionally, the audiobooks and graphic novels will assist students who have difficulty reading on grade level or decoding.

In our classroom, our small group instruction focuses on building student comprehension and literacy skills; these books will help facilitate that growth.

We also hope that students enjoy the choices and the diversity of the book choices in order to help them foster a love for reading.
