My Project

I teach 28 wonderfully sweet, multi-ethinic, multi-lingual second grade students in a Title 1 school in Brooklyn. Two-thirds of my class are on or above grade level. I am happy to have some skilled readers and I want to take them to the next level. In my experience, I have noticed that great readers become fantastic writers and fantastic writers become great thinkers and excel across all disciplines. This is my goal to develop well rounded students who enjoy learning and thrive in all areas.

I think putting great books in my students' hands that they can't put down will do just this.

While these students are proficient readers, some are hesitant readers while others read because I ask them to do it. I want to give them the books on their levels that they can dive into and get hooked on great characters, stories and series. My goal is to have students who want to read because they love to do it.

Placing great stories at their fingertips will do just this. While I have been a big fan of digital libraries in the past, I have noticed that my students attention span on the digital books are short. I think tangible books with well developed characters, stories and illustrations will level the playing field for them and help them develop a genuine love of reading and show them there is a much more exciting world beyond their devices.
