My Project

I teach 28 wonderfully sweet, multi-ethinic, multi-lingual second grade students in a Title 1 school in Brooklyn. A quarter of my class is reading on a kindergarten level. Another 10% is reading on a first grade level. There is a lot of ground to make up and I committed to help them make gains and bridge the gaps.

I need the right tools to get this done.

Getting books in my students' hands on their reading level is essential since they are not able to access most of the curriculum independently due to the reading levels. It is important that they make gains now. I love digital libraries, but am finding they do not meet the needs of this student population well. While my students have already made gains without proper access to materials that they need, I can only imagine what they can do with the materials that are on their level. I have chosen books on both kindergarten and first grade reading level which are sparsely available in my classroom library so students can get hooked on books on their reading level as they developed their confidence and competence in reading and decoding.

There is no substitute for putting a variety of books in a child's hands that they can engage with as they develop a love of books and reading. Help set my students up for success in life and get them hooked on reading.
