Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love the guitar. We have more students enrolled than we have working guitars. Our guitars were donated through various music programs. Many were made with defective plastic tuning pegs that broke, making the guitars unusable. Purchasing metal pegs will be like purchasing new guitars.

Statistics show that students who learn an instrument perform better academically and feel more connected to their school.

Guitar class is offered to grades 6, 7 and 8. Guitar is equally popular with both boys and girls. The demographics of our school are approximately 83% Latino, 14% African American, 2% White, and 1% Middle Eastern. 97% of the students qualify for free or reduced price school lunch. Despite the challenges poverty presents, these students are passionate about their learning. Additionally, many of the students would like to apply to music high schools. If they can progress in their understanding of the guitar, they will have more opportunities to do so. They come to class with lists of songs they've heard on the radio and want to sing and play. At their request, we are currently playing Photograph by Ed Sheeran, Hall of Fame by The Script, and 7 Years by Lukas Graham to name a few. In the past they have performed songs by Traci Chapman and Beyonce.

My Project

Currently, the students are sharing guitars between the different classes. As a result, students cannot take a guitar home to practice. Therefore, they can only play the guitar twice per week for 50 minutes. Students do not progress very fast at this rate and can lose interest quickly. Providing a guitar that a student can take home helps that student develop responsibility. Because we have a limited number of guitars only some of our students will be able to play in the concerts and graduation ceremony we have scheduled. Music performances offer opportunities to build community, self-confidence, and school spirit. We put on multiple concerts each year and would like as many students as possible to perform.

By donating to this project you will put guitars in the hands of students eager to practice and perform in the Spring Concert.

It will ensure each student has an instrument to be responsible for in class and allow them the chance to take their instrument home so they can practice. Your donation this year will provide good guitars to our program that will be used by many students in many years to come.
