About My Students

The students at my school are enthusiastic learners. Sometimes because of lack of funds, our students need to make sacrifices and have to go without their daily needs met. As a teacher, I see the strain this puts on our students. It is difficult to be ready to learn when you are worried about having an outfit to wear. Our school counselor started a "store" where students could find donated clothing, personal hygiene, and food. Our students need their store stocked with items that will take their mind offs the necessities and help them focus on learning.

When people think about what it takes to be successful in high school, their minds immediately go to studying hard so they can get good grades. We want all of our students to be successful, but some students face roadblocks that make being their best difficult. Their concentration may suffer because they are not getting enough to eat. They may want to stay home because they don't have any clean clothing because they don't have laundry soap to wash their clothing. My students want to help their peers overcome these challenges by purchasing items for the food pantry run by the school guidance counselor.

In Their Own Words

Students at our school who need help getting everyday items like food, clothing and personal hygiene products are invited to visit the school pantry. The pantry is stocked with donations from teachers and the community. We, as students, want to be able to help our peers get the items they need.

To be a real help to the pantry we wanted to know what needs the pantry had. We used our writing skills to e-mail our guidance counselor to see what types of items were most requested and what items were of the greatest needs.

When the items get to our school we will be helping unload the packages and restock the shelves.

We think that students struggling to meet their daily basic needs is a problem that a lot of people in our community don't know about. We want people to know that even if you get free and reduced lunch you still have other needs. It is hard to be focused on school if you are hungry!
