My Project

The amount of work and effort my students have put in this year is mind-blowing! After not being in school for almost two years due to COVID, it was as if they craved socialization at school and just getting outside with their peers. They took an overgrown area full of two years worth of weeds and transformed it into a raised bed garden worthy of Better Homes and Gardens magazine! We need a few more beds and potting soil to cover the last area we cleared this month. With those beds constructed and filled, we will grow enough food to send home vegetables, herbs, and flowers every week. We also want to do a cayenne pepper pest repellent experiment to see if it is successful.

Many of my students had told me that the garden is their happy place, and they enjoy coming to class and weeding, watering, and just sitting and talking with their friends because they couldn’t do any of that when school was virtual with COVID.

To me, being able to provide a safe place for my students and giving them an area to be themselves and not have to worry about the outside world is a significant win. Sometimes even when SEL is not the focus, it finds a way into our lessons and helps to give the students a way to cope with the chaos that has become our world lately.
