My students need a listening center and books to help them become fluent readers who are able to read smoothly, quickly, and with expression.

My Students

Do you remember reading The Giving Tree? What about Where the Wild Things Are? My first grade students miss out on the wonderful message these books share, because without the ability to read fluently they are so focused on sounding out words, that they miss the meaning of the text.

My first graders attend a Title I school in Oklahoma.

Ninety-eight percent of the students receive free or reduced priced lunches because they live in poverty. They are at that point where they are just learning to read and explore the world of books. They face so many challenges, that I hope to make learning to read an enjoyable experience!

My Project

I am requesting a listening center for my students to help them become fluent readers. When children listen to experienced readers read aloud with expression and appropriate pacing, they understand what good reading sounds like. This listening center will allow my students to listen to experienced readers, and for many of my students this is something that aren't able to experience at home with their parents. I am requesting the very basics to get my listening center up and running for the upcoming school year: cd player, headphone junction, headphones, and a few starter audio books.

Listening centers are a great way to get first graders excited about reading.

As they are just beginning to read, just placing a book in their hands can be intimidating. Listening to reading and following along in a book gives students the confidence that they can become readers too! I hope you'll consider helping my students fall in love with reading!
