My Students

In our classroom, students work their hardest to get ahead in a system where they already have two strikes against them. They come from a low-income community and they have a variety of special needs. These kids work with what we have, but they can be even more successful with updated tools.

They are predominantly male, but there are a few female students.

Students at this school have a higher risk for exposure to violence and poverty based on the community and environment. These kids are fighters. They have a lot of odds to beat. Sometimes they mess up, but they are only asking for help in the only way they know how. They are funny and clever and they love to be social. The students are exposed to old, used and torn down items and would love upgraded tools. The students in my classroom are in need of additional supports and motivators to meet their essential academic needs and individualized educational plans. The majority of the students in the program have a specific learning disability and need accommodations such as text to speech software, scribe software, and calculators.

My Project

In the ever growing fast paced tech world students need access to updated technology. Unfortunately, resources are limited at our school and the technology students do have access to is outdated and run down. These laptops will help my students in a variety of ways including but not limited to, taking the Smarter Balance State Test and reading comprehension quizzes in their own classroom, writing essays and completing fun interactive projects, play educational games, creating online student portfolios where they can keep their work and track their progress. Lastly, this in class tech center will reduce frustrations students have with using outdated and broken technology.

A donation of laptop computers will change our classroom climate tremendously.

Students will be proud of the work they complete using this technology. It will give them a new set of skills that they can take with them into life after graduation. It will better prepare them not only for their end of year exams, but also for careers. Technology is often a luxury not afforded to students in low-income communities, and this donation will help level the playing field when it comes to the opportunity gap.
