I work in a high poverty school district in the heart of the Arkansas Delta. Over 60% of the student population receives free or reduced lunches. As a result, many don't have the resources to purchase technology and other resources needed to extend learning after school hours. The students I serve are diagnosed with Dyslexia. Dyslexia is a brain-based genetic trait that affects one in five students and makes reading, writing, and spelling difficult. Although children with Dyslexia may have trouble with written language, it has nothing to do with a lack of intellect. These children are bright and talented individuals who just need a different approach to learning.
My Project
My students come to me for multi-sensory intervention in reading and spelling. They love technology, and Chromebooks will give them another way to practice spelling and dictation sentences during intervention. The touch feature will allow them to manipulate mouth pictures used for phonological awareness activities in class using a SmartBoard application.
Not only will the Chromebooks be useful to engage students in therapy, they will also be used to provide accommodations to help students succeed in the classroom.
Google Classroom is widely used in our school. Chrome extensions such as Read and Write will give students access to text to speech within Google documents. They will be able to clarify unknown words, follow highlighted words as text is read, and even practice fluency using Read and Write. The Chromebooks will also give them access to audio versions of the books they are reading through applications such as BookShare and Learning Ally. Audio books will allow them to follow along in the text and give them better access to the curriculum. Our goal is to have a Chromebook available for every student with dyslexia, and having this project funded will bring us one step closer to that goal.
