Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Who wants to read their poem first?"

Nearly all hands shoot into the air.

Some students lean forward in their desks, hoping to make their hand more prominent. A few whisper "me, me, me" quietly, but urgently.

These kids are WRITERS. They are poets. They are voracious readers. They are risk-takers. They are critical thinkers. They are passionate orators. They love to create and to share those creations.

It is my job to provide them with the resources they need to get their voices out in the world. I'd like your help with that.

My Project

With my junior high students, I strive to teach them two things (in addition to reading, writing, and thinking critically): How to see the world from someone else's perspective, and how to bounce back from tough times.

These two books will allow us to see what it would have been like--through pictures and a memoir-- to be a part of the "Little Rock Nine" through the eyes of 14-year-old Carlotta Walls.

We will study the challenges she faced as well as the resilience she exhibited and work to apply those lessons to our own lives.

The nation is talking about segregation, and integration, and bussing, but we'd like to learn more about it from someone who was actually there. Then, we'll develop Genius Hour projects that center around social justice and use our skills as readers, writers, poets, and orators to make small but impactful changes at our school and in our community. Your contribution would be deeply appreciated.
