My Students

I do believe that music must be a universal language. When we play music in the classroom, one can see even the nonverbal and quiet children move to the music, break out in song or become attentive to the words in the song. The children seem to smile and relax.

I work in a high risk; high needs urban school in Virginia.

The preschoolers in our school program are lively, active children who love music. The children that I work with directly are delayed in speech and/or literacy skills (which they needed to succeed in school). They often are able to sing concepts that they cannot otherwise talk about. I just wish that we had other instruments besides the rhythm sticks to help us sing our songs. The children sing many of the concepts that they are expected to learn such as colors, the alphabet, numbers, opposites, and phonological awareness skills. We use rhythm sticks when we sing. The children in my class are so creative that at least half of the students try to use the rhythm sticks as drum sticks and begin to drum on objects in the classroom while they sing. I have reached the conclusion that the children would benefit from having a wider selection of instruments to choose from.

My Project

Research has reported that when preschoolers play instruments, they take a more active role in the cognitive, singing and dancing process. The instruments will give the children a knowledge of different types of instruments. The children will also have a chance to experience the sounds and tones of the different instruments. The instruments will be used during circle time (for singing and dancing), music time and performance events for parents. We will also play a lot of literacy games with the instruments such as beat the drum two times when you hear the "b" sound. Lastly, the variety of instruments will help the students work on social skills. With such a variety of instruments the students will be forced to learn to share and take turns. The wider selection of instruments will enable the children to spend less time creating a new instrument to play and more time to sing and concentrate on the new concepts introduced in the song.

There are not many opportunities in our area for the children this age to be exposed to music during the school day (especially on a regular basis).

The instruments will allow the children to see and have hands on experience. More importantly, the instruments will allow the children to practice many much needed skills needed to succeed in school.
