Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am a fifth and sixth grade inclusion teacher at a highly disadvantaged public school in the Bronx. 100% of my students receive free lunches and 97% of the other students in my school do as well. My school has no performing arts and this year I will be directing the first play in many years at my school. We have very limited supplies which to work. While I want to teach my students that they can create theatre and art without spending a lot of money, we still need some basic supplies to get us started. My students will require books, DVDs, scripts, drafting supplies, and basic stage equipment to use in the classroom and on stage. We will be making all of our own masks, costumes, and sets. At the end of the year students will be able to write and perform original plays in a reader's theater atmosphere. I also plan to have a before-school program to work on improvisation and vocal work. This will not be possible without your support. My students are incredibly talented, creative, and energetic. Most of them have never seen a play, much less been a part of one. I know that studying theatre will boost their self-esteem, hone their analytical and writing skills, and provide an outlet for which to express themselves. Moreover, our school plays will help instill a badly needed sense of school spirit into our halls. I plan to use dramatic techniques to reinforce the curriculum, practice creative writing skills, and to discuss and deconstruct social issues. My ultimate goal is to instill a sincere appreciation for the arts. A true theater experience would benefit each one of my 25 students more than words can express, while also helping the rest of my school community. Thank you so much in advance!
